In honor of the late Rick Salmastrelli we are proud to announce the I WILL WAIT FOR YOU: The Rick Salmastrelli Scholarship! This scholarship will be available for all senior athletes at Lawrence High School that display community focused characteristics. In every team there needs to be a person that encourages the team to play their hardest, work to the best of their abilities and shows a deep commitment to his or her teammates and the game itself. We are looking for that team player who doubles as the team cheerleader, advocate, and is its greatest supporter.
Rick passed away from cancer in September of 2011. Even though he is not here, we want to honor his spirit and love for the student athlete through this scholarship. Each year we look to honor a senior athlete who has the same positive and team building qualities that Rick illustrated in his life and that he respected and valued in his team players. This scholarship will help the chosen student athlete take his or her excellent attitude and team dedication on to the next level at college.
Rick Salmastrelli was a strong supporter of Lawrence High School and the ultimate fan of all Cardinal Sports. Loving all Lawrence athletic competitions, Rick became deeply involved with the Lawrence Basketball teams as the “voice of the nest” starting in the early 1970s. Rick was the supreme announcer of all Lawrence basketball team games. He carried his love of sports over to his love for the players, their dedication and the effort they put out on the field, track, and court at every game. Like every player, Rick brought his A-game to every sporting event that he attended. His voice dictated the excitement at home in the nest and made every game an event. This man was full of cheer, positivity and had a personality that welcomed you with open arms. He took a vested interest in all student athletes and continued to be their fans far past their high school days. He touched everyone that he encountered which made him such a valuable asset in his community. Rick Salmastrelli will forever leave his mark at Lawrence.
